Practical information to help you navigate the NDIS and get the most from your supports.

Why We Write This

The NDIS can be confusing, and it changes often. This is where we break down what’s actually happening, in plain language, so participants, families, plan managers, and support coordinators can make informed decisions.

Self-Managed, Plan-Managed, or Agency-Managed: What's the Difference, and Does It Matter?

One of the first decisions NDIS participants make, often without realising how much it matters, is how their plan will be managed. The three options are self-management, plan management, and agency management, and each affects how much control you have, how much admin you take on, and which providers you can use.

Self-managed participants have the most flexibility, including the ability to use unregistered providers, but take on the responsibility of paying invoices themselves.

Plan-managed participants get a plan manager to handle admin and payments, while still choosing from both registered and unregistered providers.

Agency-managed participants have the NDIA pay providers directly, but can only use registered providers like True Light Support.

There’s no universally “best” option, it depends on how much admin you want to take on, and how much flexibility you need.

Five Signs It Might Be Time to Switch NDIS Providers

Many participants don’t realise that switching providers is not only allowed, but often straightforward. Here are signs it might be worth exploring other options:

1. Long wait times, if you’re waiting months for appointments, your current provider may not have capacity to meet your needs.

2. Poor communication, you shouldn’t have to chase your provider for basic updates.

3. Supports that feel generic, therapy should be built around your specific goals.

4. Limited delivery options, if you need in-home or telehealth and your provider doesn’t offer it, that’s worth addressing.

5. You’ve simply outgrown the relationship. Switching doesn’t require permission from your current provider.

What the Thriving Kids Reform Means for Families in 2026

The NDIS early childhood system has been going through significant change, with reforms like Thriving Kids reshaping how young children access support outside of individual NDIS plans.

The intent is to make sure early support is available to more children who need it, delivered through a broader mix of services. In practice, this means it’s more important than ever to work with providers who understand both pathways.

If you have questions about what these changes mean for your child specifically, our team is happy to talk it through.
